Corrosion as an Environmental and Material Reaction

Corrosion is the degradation of material caused by chemical reaction with other materials and the environmental. As a result of a corrosion reaction, a material will change its nature in a lower direction or it can be said the ability of the material will be reduced.

In the metallurgical field, corrosion events can be seen as events or reaction of compounds which return to their original form or can be called the reverse of the metallurgical extraction process.

Corrosion events occur due to chemical and electrochemical reaction. However, for the occurrence of corrosion events there are several main elements that must be met in order for the corrosion reaction to take place. The corrosion main elements are as follows:

Material corrosion

In the event of a corrosion, a material will be an anode. Anode is a part of a reaction that will undergo oxidation. As a result of the oxidation reaction, a metal loses electrons, and the metal compound ions turn into free ions.

Corrosion environmental

In the event of a corrosion, an environmental will be as a cathode. The cathode is a part of the reaction that will be reduced. As a result of the reduction reaction, a cathode-like environmental will require electrons to be taken from the anode. Some environmental that can be cathodeic are the environment of water, atmosphere environmental, gas environmental, mineral acids environmental, soil environmental, and oil environmental.

The reaction between material and the environmental

The reaction between a materials and its environmental is a very important requirement in the event of a corrosion event. Corrosion reaction will only occur if there is a relationship or direct contact between the material and the environment. As a result of this relationship, there will be a reduction and oxidation reaction that takes place spontaneously.

Electrolyte corrosion

To support a reduction and oxidation reaction and complete the electrical circuit, the anode and cathode must be equipped with an electrolyte. Electrolytes conduct electricity because they contain ions that are capable of delivering electroequivalent forces so the corrosion reaction can take place.

That was the plengdut article about corrosion, hopefully can help you in teaching and learning activities and increase knowledge about corrosion.
